When people think about home security cameras today, there are basically two main options to be taken into account. The first is a camera (or cameras) that record to a regular video tape or DVD; and the second is the type that broadcasts live via internet. Obviously, the first question anyone interested in installing a home security camera should consider is: which is the most suitable type for me?
Unfortunately, there is no one correct answer: each person has their own particular needs and circumstances. Some people, of course, will claim that the answer is easy: they want the cameras for security. But ask yourself, security from what? Potential burglars when you’re away or during the night? Or are you concerned with activities that may be going on in the home when the kids are there, when you have household help present, and so on? Having home security cameras installed that record to a VCR or DVR may be a good idea for typical security scenarios, such as wanting to scare away burglars. A potential thief may see the camera and be motivated to leave or move to a different target.
Home security cameras that record to a tape are also good if you suspect theft from persons like the cleaning company, contractors, the nanny, and so on. You can record and then view the tapes at your leisure, and also have evidence you can present to the person or to the police.
But for some families, a parent may want to protect their children or an elderly relative who may be home alone, or keep a watchful eye on them. For example, you may suspect that your child has friends over after school when you’ve told him or her that this wasn’t allowed. By having home security cameras that broadcast over a website, you are able to log on and view what’s happening in your house at any given time. If you see your child having friends over or doing anything else, you can simply call home and deal with the situation. In cases like these, you may not be concerned with having home security cameras that actually record events to be played back later, but just need something that will let you be in two places at once, so to speak.
Even when you’ve decided which type of camera and system you want to install, you still need to take into account a few potential problems or precautions. For example, if you’re installing cameras to keep an eye on someone in your home, a nanny or a housekeeper, for instance, then you must be careful where you place the cameras. They are considered employees of yours and may not be recorded in certain places, such as the bathroom or their private “areas”. It is also a good idea to let your children know that you’re installing a camera (or cameras), so that you don’t catch them doing something embarrassing. You also want to avoid them thinking that you just don’t trust them.
However, if you place a couple of home security cameras outside your home, so that potential burglars can see them and know that they are there, it can go a long way to making your home a more secure place.
