Planning Your Home Security Camera System

Filed under: Camera Surveillance - 13 Feb 2008

A home security camera system is made up of several different components, and can be suitable for anyone just starting out or for other, more experienced, home security DIYers. Since we are talking about a system, it is extremely important to make sure you know exactly what you want before you start buying components, and. above all, to make sure that the different components work together - i.e. they should be compatible. Let’s look at the different components you’re going to need, beginning with the DVR.

DVR

A DVR is a digital video recorder. Basically these are the machines that have taken the place of VCRs, and record on a DVD rather than a video tape. A DVR is essential if you want your home security camera system to record what it “sees”. What is more, if you have more than one camera, you’re going to need a DVR with more than one channel. Fortunately, most modern-day DVRs have four channels, while some of them have eight. If you’re in doubt, tell your retail store how many cameras you’re thinking of installing, and they’ll tell you which models will be suitable for your purpose. (more…)

What Makes a Good Home Security Camera?

Filed under: Camera Surveillance - 11 Feb 2008

It is becoming more and more common for people to install a home security camera to guard - or to keep an eye on - their home or property. If the aim is to keep intruders out (or at least to try to scare them away or have a record of anyone who tries to get in), then the camera will be placed outside; if the aim is to keep an eye on your babysitter or other home help, or if you just want to be able to see your baby or child while you’re at work or on a trip, then your home security camera will be placed inside.

Obviously, if you’re looking to protect your home from burglars, then you’re going to need a camera that will work outside - it will need to be weatherproof and it will need to be able to record at night. (more…)
