Filed under: DIY Tips, General Information - 14 Mar 2008

Many people today are turning to a home security system to protect themselves, their family, and their belongings. The right alarm system, coupled with some good spotlights and common sense changes to your property, can go a long way toward scaring off any would-be intruders. When a thief sees the keypad of the home security system, he’s more likely to move to the next target; even if you have some nice things inside your home, why risk it when someone down the street or a few blocks over has the same home electronics that you do but without any type of home security system protecting it?

Spy cameras are also becoming more affordable and easier to install, while their pictures are actually becoming crisper and clearer as well. Whatever you want to accomplish with your home security system, there’s likely to be a piece of equipment or gadget for you. Intruder Alert Systems and their Evolution

Filed under: Equipment, General Information - 12 Mar 2008

Older burglar alarms were fairly elementary. A door or window was opened at the wrong time and an alarm went off, either in the house or at a remote location or both. Installing them required adding wiring and attached devices - an expensive proposition. But security systems have evolved greatly over the past twenty years, incorporating much more sophisticated technology.

Modern homes are often being manufactured today with pre-installed wiring for a home security system. The same cables and ordinary wiring used for home and professional networks can provide a medium for connecting alarm systems composed of PCs, video/audio, panels and more. But there are also wireless systems that might be a better option for those whose homes don’t have that feature. (more…)

If you can do that you can make it less likely that burglars will target your house - they obviously don’t want to get caught, so they minimize the odds by looking for easy targets.

Not all burglars are professionals - some amateurs will just smash and grab something from your garage, or slip in through an unlocked door while you’re out. But professional burglars think things through more carefully in order to maximize their catch and minimize the risk. (more…)

Home Security - Not Just for the Rich

Filed under: General Information - 23 Feb 2008

In the past, home security systems were a preserve of the rich. That was logical when the systems themselves were very expensive and, anyway, things worth protecting were only to be found in the homes of the rich. Luckily, things are different now. It is now easier to find simpler home security systems that are affordable even for the most modest homes, and most of us now have some things that might attract the attention of a burglar or intruder.
