Most of us would like to have a monitored alarm system to protect our homes, and that’s probably what we should all be working towards. However, for some of us, that objective may be a little while away. In the meantime there are many things we can do to improve our home security that will make it less likely that it will be broken into. It’s a known fact that burglars go for the easy pickings – they choose the homes that offer the least resistance. So, if you want your home to avoid a nasty visit from the criminals, just make it more difficult for them – that way they’ll move on to another house that makes it easier for them. Here are five very simple, common-sense tips that can improve your security and save your house from being targeted.

5 “Easy” Tips

  1. The simplest advice: do the obvious. It sounds incredible, but many break-ins are not in fact break-ins. Thieves find an unlocked door or window and simply walk in! So, the first rule of home security is, when you go out, make sure you lock all the doors and windows, including your garage door. If you have an alarm system, switch it on. Try not to leave valuables in the home. Don’t leave a key under the doormat, under the flowerpot, above the doorframe, etc. Common-sense, right? Right!
  2. Another simple idea – make it difficult for burglars not to be seen trying to break in. If you have a hedge, or bush, in front of your door, or your French windows, a criminal can take his (or her) time breaking in, in the knowledge that no one can see him (or her). So, make sure that the points of entry to your house (doors and windows) are not “invisible” to your neighbors or passers-by – cut down those bushes. Also make sure that any potential entry points are lit up at night, including your garage. Burglars don’t like being the centre of attraction!
  3. Perhaps you have a neighborhood watch program. If so, join it and try to encourage members to be as active as possible. Talk to your neighbors and agree that you will all watch out for any suspicious movements in your gardens – and call the police immediately if you see any. Burglars will keep away from your area if they know that people are aware of what is going on and will advise the police.
  4. Use signs as a deterrent. Burglars just don’t have the time – or the inclination – to find out if your home really is connected to a monitored alarm system, or whether your dog really exists. They’ll just move on to the nearest home without any of these signs, without lighting, with no “nosy” neighbors, etc. (In fact, having a dog – any kind of dog that barks – is a great idea for your home security anyway.)
  5. Burglaries can also happen with you in the house. Criminals can call at your door and, if you let them, they will either force their way in or enter under false pretenses. I say, “if you let them”, because that is almost always the case. Don’t do it! If you have a peep-hole, use it, and if you don’t know the person who has called, simply don’t open the door until you’re sure it’s a bone-fide visit. If you receive a visit from someone who says he’s from the electricity company (or water company, or…), ask to see his identification, but don’t stop there – if you have the slightest suspicion, ring the company and ask.

After reading these 5 tips, you’ll probably say, “well, that’s all obvious”. Maybe, but how many of us can say “Yes, I do all of these things, all of the time”. If you’re one of them, congratulations, your home will be more secure than most. If not, begin - seriously - implementing these 5 home security tips right now!
