Articles and books about home security tend to focus on individual homes, but many of us live in apartment buildings or condominiums. Is “apartment security” basically the same as “home security”, or are there other aspects to be considered? First, we should consider whether it is the management of the apartment block or the condominium that is responsible for security, or whether it is the individual owners. Then we need to think about the types of measures individual apartment owners can take to increase the security of their properties. The purpose of this article is to look at the different aspects to be taken into account by apartment owners when considering the security of their home.
In most cases the management of the condominium or apartment block will be responsible for what might be called “external” security. Basically this means the perimeter of the building, the main entrance, the garden, the common spaces, etc. Most condominium managements take this very seriously, because it makes their property a more attractive place to live. But what about the security of each of the individual apartments or condo units? In almost all cases, it will be the apartment owners who will be responsible for maintaining the security of their individual apartment or unit. So what should they consider when thinking about apartment security systems?
The Basics
The first things to bear in mind are the obvious ones. For example, whenever you go out, lock your doors and windows. In many cases, individual apartment or unit owners are not allowed to install their own alarm system, but they are able to install a reinforced door, or bars on their first floor windows. Just have a look at your property from the outside and you’ll probably see for yourself where there are weaknesses that need to be solved. Is there anything else that can be done?
Perhaps even more important than physical security systems and measures is attitude and behavior. An apartment block or condominium is the perfect place to set up a similar thing to a “neighborhood watch” program, where neighbors agree to keep an eye on what is going on in their block or condominium. After all, people live much closer and apartments and condo units are much easier to see from one to another. It should also be agreed between all of the occupants that no one, ever, should open the main door to any person they do not know – even if they give the name of a neighbor. Finally, just as in a detached home, never open the door to someone you don’t know – use the peephole and ask for identification.
It is extremely important to keep in mind security considerations when buying a new apartment or condo unit. And it is just as important to get the seller to make any repairs before you agree to buy – after you’ve come to an agreement you have much less leverage.
As we’ve seen here, basic condo and apartment security systems and techniques do not differ very much from those for an independent home. It is important to make sure your door and windows are well protected, but perhaps it is attitude and behavior which is more important in protecting your home. If you follow the steps outlined here, you will be able to feel a little safer in your apartment block or condominium.
